It is a broad term that encompasses any kind of poetry recited aloud, including but not limited to poetry readings, poetry slams, jazz poetry, and hip hop and can include comedy routines and prose monologues. What differentiates spoken word from written poetry is that sound is one of the main components, compares to written poetry it has less to do with physical on the page aesthetics and more to do with the aesthetics of sound.
