We have written extensively about the phenomenon that is Ethic Entertainment and the following of other Gengetone artists such as the Ochungulo Family has managed to accrue in a short period of time. This can be attributed to the fact that they are giving the people the music “they want” with the sometimes vulgar and sexual nature of their music. This, however, is not the case with 125Musiq.
Firstly, and most importantly we must acknowledge the ‘125’ in the name of the band. They are paying homage to their hood – Rongai. This is admirable as it the foundation of their sound. The first single that threw them into the limelight was “Bizna” which was dedicated to the many youths that are on the hustle. The song encourages listeners not to give up and continue to fight for their dreams. According to their YouTube page “the song celebrates enterprising youth and small business people in the hood who struggle daily to earn daily bread. It urges hustles to love what they do and encourages them not to give up so that they can reap the sweet fruits of success.”
The hit was released in 2016 and since then one of the members have left the group, while the other two soldiered on to collaborate with Mugithi legend Mike Rua to give us the banger “This Is How We Do.” We had the opportunity to sit down with them in the studio and hear a lot more about everything 125Musiq!
